Research and studies at UniK are divided into several technical diciplins. This calls for a broad specter of IT services, information systems and software. Since we are a small unit, whith limited resources, we appreciate that our users make the best out of the systems and software that are already installed. More advanced scientific systems for projects and research activities must be financed, purchased and operated by the reasearchgroups themselves. Alternatively you must seek access to them through partners, the universities or among the Kjeller institutes. You'll find most of the available applications listed here, and a simple schematic of the network, and the whereabouts of the available resources here.
Concerning incomming enquiries and errormessages, we try to treat our users fairly. That's the reason why we strongly encourage everyone to contact us by e-mail, at the address 'drift at unik.no'. Many problems related to network or servers, affect all users. When we have to respond to many phones or visits concerning the same error, the debugging will take that much longer.
Lecturers, guest researchers, or others who need access to the computer network during their stay at UniK, can contact support at room 101 for a username and password. You can log in with username: 'Guest' and password: 'password', but with limited user rights. There is a guest office at room 204. Connection to the wavelan requires a wep-key (only from UniKs network).
We provide laptops for the research staff. Laptops for PhDs need to be financed by the projects and are ordered through the supervisor. A laptop user with 'administrator rights', will be economically responsible for the maintenance and debugging of the machine when serious problems occur . Support reserve the rights to arrange for debugging or repairs at a local repairshop at the expence of the project. Do not use your laptop as a 'laboratory' for testing software, nonstandard peripheral equipment or other technical testing. We provide "second hand" stationary PC for laboratory use. Make sure you have an antivirus program (F-Secure), and that real-time scanning is activated. Also keep Windows automatic updates, and the internal firewall activated at all times.
Normally staff members will be set up with a home directory on the server 'oslo'. This will be automaticall mapped up to the PC on login, and will appear as a network drive called 'username on oslo/home'. We strongly recommend regular cleanups of the directory. We will provide alternative storage areas for large files like mediafiles or large collections of scientific data (\\madrid\storage or USB disk). The home directories should only be used for data that requires daily backups.
Contact support if you want a personal 'homepage' on our webserver http://www.unik.no. The personal website will be located on a network path similar to \\tripoli\webusers\username. The URL will be similar to "http://www.unik.no/people/username. If you want a link from UNIKs official webpages to your own homepage, contact support or the administration.
The standard e-mail program is MS Outlook. You can also read mail remotely with a browser on URL: http://webmail.unik.no.
A shared storage area for all employees can be mapped up on the network path: \\oslo\Ansatt_Felles. There is also a "SharePoint server" for collaboration and information sharing: http://torvet.
Remote connection to the network is possible with VPN (Virtual Private Network) to server 'vpn.unik.no', or with Remote Desktop Gateway to address 'remote.unik.no'. We do not provide technical support for 'home office' networks. We can not guarantee that all resources and services are accessible remotely.
We will provide PCs and other computer equipment for laboratory or 'handson' excercises related to the courses. If necessary, lecturers can hire a "student assistent" for setup and operations. Contact the administration for further information. We will also assist the research groups in purchasing and installing computer equipment, but we do not have the capacity to provide support and operations.
Distance education has been an important issue at UniK. Two classrooms are equipped with video conferance facilities to connect students at other institutions to our lectures, or allow our students to follow courses at other universities (most often at University in Oslo and The Norwegian Univeristy of Science and Technology). Video conference is also usefull for meetings. Contact the administration to use videoconferance for distance education. Contact IT support for other use.
Technical info: The videocodecs has ip address: 193.156.97.18 (room 301) and 193.156.97.19 (room 401). It's behind a firewall that need to be programmed for each connection.
We strongly recommend that lecturers make use of the web for more flexible learning. UniK offer a professional LMS (Learning Management System). The service is operated by UiO and is called 'Fronter' (Switch language in the popup menu next to "Språk"). Use of the system requires a password from UiO. Contact the administration for details. IT support will assist in building an local 'course homepage', - as an alternative or in addition to the LMS.
Projectors are installed in the auditorium, room 112, 301, 308B and 402. Mobile projectors are available from the reception. Support can normally lend out laptops, memorysticks and USB disks.
It is important that the research groups and the research activities are properly presented at UNIKs website. Contact 'drift' or the web editorial group, 'red at unik.no', for support on building webpages for groups or projects. All enquieries concerning the editorial content or design of UNIKs official webpages should be mailed to 'red at unik.no'.
