Username at UniK

New master and PhD students receive usernames right after they are registered. Lecturers, guest researchers and students following a single course, need to contact support on mail 'drift at unik.no' or phone 702.

Users who need access to Unix environment need to ask for that specifically.

Users will have access to a mail address on the format username@unik.no, and a user directory which will be mapped automatically to the PC when logging on. E-mail can be read in MS Outlook or from Internet Explorer, URL: 'http://webmail.unik.no'. You are encouraged to change your password regularly (from a Windows PC). Forced password change after 180 days. Contact support if you want a homepage on the webserver http://www.unik.no.

Most office desks in the building are equipped with a Windows PC. Students do not have access to install software. Contact support if you need additional software.

PCs are also available in the 'open office' at third floor. There are printers on each floor. You can locate printers and other IT resources in this scheamatic.

MS Office and Acrobat Reader are installed, locally, on every Windows PC. Other applications can be accessed on a number of terminal servers . The terminal servers 'athen' og 'amman' give access to scientific programs Matlab og Mathematica. On the server 'roma' you will find 'Visual Studio', some editors: Mathtype, Adobe Acrobat og EndNote, and a english-norwegian dictionary. A full account of available applicatons is hard to maintain. Remote connection is possible with 'VPN' (Microsoft server: vpn.unik.no).

There is an open- and a secured wavelan. SSIDs are respectivly "UNIK_kurs" and "UNIK_Wlan". A wepcode (only available from UniKs PCs) is required for the internal secured wavelan.

For security reasons, storage space on home directories at the server called 'beijing'is limited (disk quota). Contact support if you need more than standard quota 256 MB.

The most efficient way to contact support is by mail to 'drift at unik.no'. If you don't have access to mail, or if you have things you need to discuss with us, use internal phonenumber 702.

If you need additional software or equipment for a project or for your thesis, you need to contact the project manager or your supervisor first. Other needs or suggestions concerning IT resources should be reported directly to 'drift at unik.no'.

For security reasons we have to restrict access from personal PC-s or laptops on the network. We take no responsability for private equipment brought to UniK or connected to UniKs network remotely. We can not guarantee that all resources on the network will be available remotely.

When you end your studies or job at UniK, or for other reasons do not wish to keep your username here, we appreciate that you let us know. The normal procedure is that it's deleted 3-6 months after you have graduated or left UniK.
