"Virtual private network" is a protocol that makes it possible to access resources in UNIKs computer network, almost wherever you are, as long as you have access to internet.
How ?
Start-menu, control panel, network connections. Select Make new connection. Click next/ok. In the list of alternative 'connection types', select Connect to a private network through the Internet and click next. Enter a name for the connection (UNIK), and select 'Do not dial...'. You are then asked to enter name or ip-adress. Enter vpn.unik.no and click next. When asked whether the connection should be available for others, select 'Only for myself'.
When you start VPN, - for instance by doubleclicking the icon in Control panel/Network connecions, a dialogbox appears prompting for username (username@unik.no) and password (UNIK password). Enter these and Voila ! You are connected to UniK.
To connect to any 'shared' storagearea on the central servers, you need to know the network path (hostname and sharename). Contact support for further information
When you are connected to UNIKs network, your home directory will automaticall be 'mapped up' as a network disk. Check in 'My Computer' to find out which server your homedirectory is located. To map up you home directory remotely, right click My Computer, and select map network drive. In the field folder enter the network path \\hostname\username ( e.g. \\oslo.unik.no\home\username ). If you are prompted for username and password, enter these as you would if you were connected locally
